From Freeport to Montgomery County, Pennsylvanians Are Fighting Back
This week we confronted corruption on both sides of the Commonwealth.
In Western PA, MarchOnHarrisburg members showed up where Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman was cashing in at a clay shoot and golf fundraiser in Freeport in Indiana County.
While lobbyists and donors bought their way into the Senator’s good graces with golf clubs and shotguns, our people were there to expose the truth: Pittman is one of the biggest roadblocks to passing a gift ban (and any other bills to get money out of politics) in Harrisburg.
On the other side of the state, in Montgomery County, MarchOnHarrisburg members hit the ground running in House Majority Leader Matt Bradford’s backyard. We put up billboards, knocked on doors, and talked directly to his constituents.
“Regardless of the size of your event or even the backwoods location, there will be reverberating effects felt far and near” said Sally, an Indiana County resident and MarchOnHarrisburg activist. “From the conversations held from the politician’s donors to the political themselves, to the people on social media. It’s a ripple effect. That’s what organizing is all about.”
These four House and Senate leaders have the power to bring a Gift Ban to a vote in their chambers.
Here’s the reality: These two men, Pittman and Bradford, have the power to bring a gift ban to a vote. They could end the legalized bribery that allows lobbyists and special interests to wine and dine lawmakers. They could clean out the corruption that gridlocks Harrisburg, starves SEPTA, and denies us our basic human rights. They could outlaw money in politics and end the systematic policy violence being waged on Pennsylvanians. But instead, they block, stall, and make excuses. They are the gatekeepers of corruption and the people are done waiting.
From Freeport to Montgomery County, Pennsylvanians are rising up to reclaim their democracy.
We are here to remind every legislator: you work for us, not for whoever buys your lunch.
The fight is on. We need you to sign up, show up, and speak out. We will get money out of politics only if the people make it unavoidable.
