What We Are Up Against: ALEC, Corporations & Lobbyists

  • pin Unitarian Universalist Congregation of York 925 South George Street York, PA, 17403 United States (map)

Join us on June 20 for this educational program being presented by the York Chapter of March On Harrisburg which will address the influence of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and other Anti-Democracy forces over the last several years and what we can do about it.

We will first show “The United States of ALEC,” a special film report by legendary journalist Bill Moyers on how the secretive American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has helped corporate America propose and even draft legislation for states across the country. ALEC brings together major U.S. corporations and right-wing legislators to craft and vote on “model” bills behind closed doors. We will then have a discussion led by speakers Barry Kauffman and Rabbi Michael Pollack followed by a question and answer session.

Speakers:
BARRY KAUFFMAN - For three decades, Kauffman served as the Executive Director of Common Cause, Pennsylvania’s leading government reform advocacy organization. Some of the reforms he has been credited with helping to achieve include: The Public Officials Ethics Act; Lobbyist Disclosure and Regulation Act; Open Records Reforms; Improvements to the Sunshine and Whistleblower laws; Judicial Discipline Constitutional Amendment; Tax Expenditures Act; Motor Voter Act; the Independent Counsel Act; Internet Disclosure of Campaign Contributions;
Internet availability of PA’s bills, laws and legislative calendars; Statewide Uniform Voter Registration Act; and Help America Vote Act Implementation. Kauffman was among the first to sound the alarm about Pennsylvania’s abusive redistricting system in the early 1990s, and helped to build a statewide reform coalition. Barry will be showing the following documentary and leading a discussion on the topic.

RABBI MICHAEL POLLACK- is the executive director of the non-partisan statewide group MARCH ON HARRISBURG . For over three years, Rabbi Pollack has led lobbying, marches and direct actions in Pennsylvania, particularly at the state capital, in order to end systemic corruption and to take Democracy where it has never been.
